2020 MLK Day

Service has been part of the spirit of NCSSM since it first opened its doors in 1980. From completing a minimum 60 hour service requirement for graduation to volunteering with various Triangle area organizations throughout the year, NCSSM students Accept The Greater Challenging in giving back their time and talents to our great state. Throughout the year, students volunteer their time with organizations such as Habitat For Humanity, The Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC, Crayons 2 Calculators, The Ronald McDonald House, and more!

In addition to monthly opportunities, NCSSM dedicates time on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to give back as well. More than 150 students volunteer in the community this day, often serving with members of the larger Durham area community through organizations such as The United Way, Eno River Association, and the Veterans Transitional Housing Program.

In past years, students also had the opportunity to take part in the NCSSM Food Drive every spring since March 2010. The NCSSM Food Drive was an annual event that first began in 2010 as an effort to break the Guinness World Record for the largest 24-hour food drive at a single location. On March 5, 2011, NCSSM broke the Guinness World Record for the largest 24-hour food drive by collecting 559,885 lbs. of food. To this day, NCSSM still holds the record after many attempts by other schools and organizations, and has always been willing to share documents and support others in their efforts to break the record. Since 2010, NCSSM has donated more than 1.1 million pounds of food to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC. This event took place in March and is organized by primarily by student committee members from the UNIs Fighting Hunger Club.

In addition to opportunities provide by the NCSSM Service Learning Coordinator, NCSSM host many clubs on campus with a commitment to service. Those include but are not limited to Key Club, Red Cross Club, HOSA, and many others.
